Roku devices are based on Roku OS, which is relatively simple-looking compared to other streaming platforms, but that’s actually a benefit - it’s easy to learn, and runs smoothly on any recent hardware. At least without buying additional Roku speakers, that is, but that’s true of the regular Streambar too. Oddly enough the Pro doesn’t expand HDR support, or enable any form of surround sound. An upgraded remote adds a headphone jack to private listening options, as well as customizable shortcut buttons and a finder function through the Roku app. Whereas the regular Streambar uses four 1.9-inch drivers, the ones in the Pro are sized at 2.5 inches, giving them more punch. Roku Streambar Pro ( Amazon): The major upgrade here is sound quality. You also only get Roku’s standard voice remote, limiting private listening to Bluetooth and the Roku app. There are some odd sacrifices - you don’t get Dolby Atmos, and HDR is limited to HDR10 (not HDR10 Plus). Accordingly there are HDMI, USB, and optical ports, as well as improved audio options, namely speech enhancement and Dolby Audio processing. Roku Streambar ( Amazon): The Streambar is effectively an Ultra built into a soundbar, upgrading your TV’s audio and streaming tech simultaneously. If you’ve got media on a USB drive, you can plug it directly into the set-top. Upgrades over the LT include the Voice Remote Pro, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and private listening via the remote as well as Bluetooth and the Roku app. Roku Ultra ( Amazon): This is the top of the line if you don’t want integrated speakers. The LT is harder to find these days, but if you’re determined, you can still get one via Amazon or Walmart. The Ultra LT only comes with Roku’s standard voice remote, though you do get the option of private listening through Bluetooth or the Roku mobile app. Roku Ultra LT ( Amazon): The main reason to go with an Ultra is performance - you get Roku’s fastest processor, its best Wi-Fi, best HDR compatibility, and an Ethernet port if you want maximum bandwidth. The remote is rechargeable too, so you won’t burn through batteries. ![]() That includes a headphone jack for private listening, customizable shortcut buttons, and a finder function if you lose it in the couch cushions.

![]() Still, it’s an incredibly difficult storyline to follow. The Execution: In the original gatefold vinyl packaging for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, lead singer Peter Gabriel wrote a cryptic synopsis of Rael’s hero journey after he encounters a lamb in the middle of Broadway in Manhattan. The Concept: A teenage Puerto Rican graffiti writer tumbles into an alternative dimension full of Slippermen and Lamia. The multifaceted project provides a glimpse of each of the members’ matured inner worlds through solo songs: Jin’s devotional acoustic tune “Moon” and J-hope’s cheery Afrobeat-inspired “Outro: Ego” stand in stark contrast to RM’s soul-searching rap “Intro: Persona” and V’s sentimental rock ballad “Inner Child.” Even in uncertainty, the members double down on their commitment to one another, as on the determined hip-hop anthem “ON,” when they promise to face oncoming challenges by “throwing themselves whole into both worlds.” - M.H.K. The Execution: Before BTS, few pop idols had attempted to express the anxiety that comes with maintaining such a visible public persona that’s usually not faithful to the “true self.” But with Map of the Soul: 7’s heart-rending tracks like “Black Swan,” the Bangtan boys cracked open their stage facades, exposing their fame-fueled fears with piercing introspection. The Concept: In their seventh year as a team, the seven members of BTS borrow terms from Jungian philosophy - persona, shadow, and ego - to paint a complete portrait of their “real selves.” The story was strong enough for Cooper to act out protagonist Steven’s plight on an ABC-TV special, Alice Cooper: The Nightmare - and for once, he didn’t have to sing “I’m Eighteen.” - K.G. Thanks to songwriting contributions from guitarist Dick Wagner (Lou Reed, Kiss) and producer Bob Ezrin, the album deftly spans goth fantasies (“Steven”), Fred Astaire dance numbers (“Some Folks”), feminist ballads (“Only Women Bleed”), and Shaft-esque funkathons (the title cut) - sometimes at the same time. The Execution: Alice Cooper was staging ornate, macabre vaudeville revues before Welcome to My Nightmare, but it was only after he ditched the original bandmates and went all-in on his nightmare concept that he became Alice Cooper, the rare ghoul able to upset parents but also gab with Dinah Shore. The Concept: A teenager named Steven finds himself trapped in his nightmares, encountering hungry black widow spiders, necrophiliacs, and Vincent Price before a rude awakening and a happy ending. Sit back, press “play” and envelope yourself in a whole bunch of music you’ve really got to pay attention to. To make it high on the list an album had to be both conceptually tight and musically awesome, which is why a few classic albums with relatively loose thematic conceits didn’t end up higher. Many are long, several are very very long. Some of those longform listens have been rattling bongs since back when your hippie uncle bought them on 8-track some are more recent pop masterpieces that sneak deep meanings inside slick packages. They map out epic narratives (from raging coming-of-age dramas to dystopian sci-fi fantasies) they strive to embody vast historical and political moments they’re “cinematic,” “operatic,” “novelistic.” Our list touches on everything from classic rock to R&B to punk to hip hop. These are the mindblowers that define music at its most ambitious. In honor of Midnights and its concept siblings, we present the 50 Greatest Concept Albums of All Time. Smashing Pumpkins’ ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts begins a three-part rollout next month. Other story-song albums released over the last year or so include Sturgill Simpson’s cowboy revenge saga The Ballad of Dood and Juanita and the Tedeschi-Trucks Band’s I Am the Moon, a four-EP response to Layla. Taylor Swift’s upcoming Midnights is, she says, “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.” That kind of thematic follow-through is impressive even for a detail-oriented genius like Taylor. But right along with vinyl, the theme record is having a new moment. In the streaming era, you’d think concept albums, which require listening to a record all the way through, would have about as much appeal as ripping the plastic packaging off a new CD. ![]() Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Who’s Tommy, and so many more, rock took the concept of a concept album and ran with it-with narrators, characters, and lots of lyrics and liner notes to explain it all to enrapt listeners. Video is held up by a lot of media and other sites as panacea for their businesses - videos are more engaging than other kinds of content, keeping people on your site for longer, and because of this, they are also a more lucrative platform when it comes to advertising. ![]() It sounds like exactly what we’ve been searching for and we can’t wait to get started.” We’re excited that Cloudflare Stream is being launched with the developer in mind from the beginning. “We’ve long been looking for a video solution that is simple to implement and seamless to use, and have not found one that checks all the boxes for us. “Our company is focused on bringing thoughtful and easy-to-use course delivery tools to teachers and learners wherever they are, and a huge part of doing that is through video,” said Mark Johnson, co-founder of Pathwright, in a statement. There are at least a few clients using the Stream service out of the gate. ![]() ( Here is pretty decent summary of some of the challenges of hosting your own video, and also of another alternative to hosting it on something like Cloudflare.) A typical video service could include multiple charges: from encoding companies for CPU usage based on length and quality of the video and the number of streaming formats it’s converted into from ‘traditional CDNs’ that charge different rates for each region of the world based on the number of bytes delivered and from player vendors charge at tiered levels based on the number of views. For now, the company has said that the basic premise will be to give users a pared-down, single price for everything in the video streaming chain, with a charge that includes encoding, global delivery and player.Īs Cloudflare describes it, this is a big shift from how things are done today. Pricing, meanwhile, will be similarly simplified: it will be based on the duration of time that people consume a video - and nothing else. We have contacted Cloudflare for more details about it, but it seems as if they are not making this too public while the product is still in beta. “You shoot a video, upload it to an API endpoint, and within seconds we make it available globally to adaptively stream via an embeddable link we provide,” Cloudflare notes. It’s also removing some of the technical headache around hosting and streaming video. The company has raised around $180 million, and it is now is valued at over $3 billion and now it is hotly tipped as an IPO prospect, so this would help with that.īut beyond its own financial fortunes, Cloudflare is also potentially opening up the market to a lot of more competition and video content, turning - as the company describes it - a landscape of 1,000 sites into a landscape of 100,000.Ĭloudflare Stream, the company says, will offer a service that combines encoding, global delivery and a media player into one product (typically, video streaming from the likes of Akamai but also many others often sees sites taking those services from a hodge-podge of providers). In doing so, Cloudflare is building out a new revenue stream for itself. The idea now will be to let these sites and apps provide a more direct and vastly more simplified video service that what is in the market today, putting Cloudflare head to head with other CDNs and those who host video with an all-in-one package, and giving sites and app publishers “the ease of YouTube with the power and control you used to previously only get from bespoke solutions,” in the words of the company. To be clear, Cloudflare has already been working with sites that stream video - some 1 billion people already watch video through Cloudflare daily, the company tells me - but more often than not those videos are either hosted elsewhere, or they are not the central function of the sites themselves. Now, as the company marks its 7th birthday - it actually launched on Septemit’s moving into another new area, literally and figuratively.Ĭloudflare is today taking the wraps off Stream, a new service designed specifically for websites and apps that want to build businesses hosting and streaming videos, similar to what the likes of YouTube, Vimeo, and around 1,000 other sites do today. Cloudflare has made a name for itself as a content delivery platform and security company, offering services to help keep websites up and running (sometimes running into a little controversy in the process). ![]() For the most part, this makes using the phone quite intuitive, though we found some functions were only accessible in odd ways. Sliding the ball to the right navigates deeper into the menu system, and another outside button brings up a list of auxiliary options for any given menu. A main menu displays most functions of the phone in a circular array that can be flicked through quickly with the track ball. The Sidekick uses a proprietary operating system that’s one of the more intuitive ones we’ve seen, though it has its quirks. If you’re out of high school, plan to use the Sidekick for business at all, or just want something a little easier on the eyes, you’ll almost certainly find most of the installed options on the gaudy side. While T-Mobile offers additional themes through its download catalog (most of which are along the same vein,) we really would have liked to see some more basic, refined options included by default. Default theme included loud argyle patterns, “gritty” graffiti-themed designs, and colorful rainbow collages that looked like they belonged on Trapper Keepers. Menu graphics for the phone seemed to latch onto the Sidekick’s young image as well, a bit to our annoyance. In fact, T-Mobile also offers blank shells with directions for DIY customization – a rare luxury in a world where most manufacturers prefer to void warranties for even light modifications. If neither is to your liking, you’ll also find a bountiful aftermarket for shells online, and at $15 a pop, they’re cheap enough to experiment with a few. The stock phone comes in a yellow-tinged green color, but T-Mobile also includes a glossy black (read: fingerprint-blotched black) shell with every phone. Although the majority of its face and flip-out LCD get a rather dull matte black bezel, the back and sides have been designed as removable shells that can be swapped in seconds. The much bemoaned lack of video on previous models has also been remedied with a new video recording mode that allows users to capture short clips.įrom its inception, the Sidekick has captured a youthful, trendy image, and T-Mobile has continued to cultivate that with the latest incarnation, which boasts even more customizability than the last. Hardware specs include a 2.0-megapixel camera, EDGE Internet, an included 512MB microSD card, media player capabilities, stereo Bluetooth, and customizable shells that can be swapped out to change the phone to different colors. Other vital controls outside the keyboard include an exterior BlackBerry-style trackball, a directional pad that doubles as a speaker, and a slew of dedicated buttons for navigating menus, including top and button shoulder buttons. Although Motorola changed this with the last-gen Sidekick Slide, which features a linear sliding screen, the flashy swivel screen is back in 2008. The Sidekick’s most iconic feature has always been its sideways form-factor, with a screen that swivels out of the middle to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. ![]() The latest T-Mobile Sidekick bulks up on features without bulking up on size, making it a definite upgrade and a solid value as far as we’re concerned – even with the more crowded market for smartphones. ![]() Annoying swiveling LCD screen poor video recording slow EDGE internetīefore teenagers were snapping up iPhones and BlackBerrys left and right, T-Mobile’s original Sidekick was the phone to own for fashion-savvy textaholics. ![]() These are all-electric systems, using a heat pump to both heat and cool by circulating refrigerant.
